GIRL SCOUTS SUCCESS STORY
Mind Makeover, is a section of the uniquely ME! program for girls in grades 7 – 8. Recently, girls in a school discussion group completed the mind makeover activity. Each participant wrote negative statements that are no longer acceptable to them (negative criticism that hurt their fillings, for example) and put their statements in a trash can to remove them from their minds and hearts. Next each girl created her own “positive personal mantra.” Finally, each girl decorated her own paper mache box. The outside represented what other people see and think; the inside reflected who they think they are. During this exercise, girls shared the meaning of their treasure box and what they learned with this activity.
One of the teens, who attended the Mind Makeover session, said “I am a proud mother, and this program is helping me to express my feelings. Since I had my baby, I feel lonely and out of the group, and I would like to be accepted by my friends”. In response to this, some girls in the group told her that they thought that she wanted to be alone. After this, other group members welcomed the girl and her participation increased.
