THE CALLAWAY SENIOR CENTER
The Callaway Senior Center, a United Way agency, is the long awaited fulfillment of a dream that started more than ten years ago. In 1973, the first seniors programs were established in the Fulton housing authority facility as a partnership between SERVE, an off-shoot of Ecumenical Ministries, and the Central Missouri Area Agency on Aging. The partnership was formed to provide a nutritious meal at noon Monday thru Friday, a suitable place for socialization and recreation, and to develop other services to enhance the lives of senior citizens aged 60 and older. In the beginning, a congregate lunch meal was offered each week day and a small number of meals were delivered daily to homebound seniors. Nearly 60% of our meals are now home delivered.
The Senior Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with lunch served each of those days from 11:00 to 12:30 for anyone aged 60 or older at the currently low price of $2.50 per person. The center has plenty of things to do in a comfortable smoke free environment. There is a pool room with 4 tables. A craft room where the quilting circle always needs nimble fingers. A beautiful lounge area in front of a unique stone fireplace, a well stocked library, 4 new computers with access to the internet, daily card games, and a small gift shop. We have plenty of opportunities for volunteers of all ages to help with our fund raising activities such as rummage sales Saturday night dinners, BBQ’s, dances, and other planned programs. We announce all our activities in the “What’s Happening” column of the Fulton Sun and publish a weekly menu in the service agenda section of the Fulton Sun. If you have questions, you may call the office at 573-642-2458. If you haven’t visited the center, please come and share the delights of “Coming of Age” in Callaway County. We’re located at 531 Commons Dr., adjacent to the Fulton Cinema 8 and directly behind Sutherlands. There are no dues or membership requirements other than an interest in getting involved in your community of senior citizens.
