Kevin Ryan knew that
helping his community was the most important thing
he could do. He used his position in the media –
working for
KRCG-TV –
to make a difference wherever he could. He donated
his time to the
Boy Scouts
and to the
Callaway County
United Way along with doing volunteer
work for other charitable organizations.
Early in 2005, Kevin was
diagnosed with
Scleroderma,
a devastating disease that weakened him physically,
but did not alter his dedication to others. Despite
his illness, Kevin – with the help of his father,
Jack Ryan – filmed the campaign video for the
Callaway County United Way.
Kevin lost his battle
with
Scleroderma
on July 31st, 2005. He was phoning
instructions for the campaign video to his father up
until the last days of his life.
On September 6th,
2005, The Callaway County United Way announced the
establishment of the Kevin Ryan Memorial Media
Award. This award is presented annually to a member
of the media in Central Missouri that exhibits the
same dedication to community that Kevin Ryan did so
admirably.
