Callaway county UNITED WAY
More than fundraising
fulton, mo, September 30, 2009: The United Way has traditionally been a fundraising entity, distributing money raised to local agencies that provide essential programs and services to the community. However, the new Callaway County United Way is much more than that, making huge changes in its goals and mission.
“The principle now is LIVE UNITED,” says board president Cathi Miller Harris. “And LIVE UNITED covers a lot of territory.”
PR/Community Impact Chair, Peg Dzicek adds, “The traditional design of United Way is changing. We’re not only fundraising; we’re assessing problems in our community, finding resources, using innovative ways of solving these problems rather than just throwing money at them. We used to take a band-aid approach to everything. Today, the Callaway County United Way is looking for and finding solutions.”
LIVE UNITED asks everyone in the community to do three things: GIVE – Support the Callaway County United Way with your donation; ADVOCATE – Be an outspoken supporter of the Callaway County United Way as well as for the people in your community less fortunate, and; VOLUNTEER – Give more than money! Commit to one hour a month to help someone else.
LIVE UNITED specific goals include income stability, health care and education. “By reaching out to the community for technology, expertise, ideas and donations,” said Miller Harris, “we can envision a day in Callaway County when homelessness, unemployment and dropping out of school are things of the past.”
The Callaway County United Way will kick off their fall campaign this Friday, October 9th with their 10th annual Radio-thon which will be held in the Fulton Walmart parking lot beginning at 6:00 AM. The Radio-thon will be live on both local radio stations, KFAL & K-Hits. In addition to the live interviews there will be a BBQ, auction, Amy’s Dance Academy performances, Callaway Cruise (car/motorcycle show), a kid’s booth, a Red Cross Blood Drive, tarot card readings and much, much more.
